The Glenlivet is renowned for the smooth and fruity flavour profile of its whisky, which is a result of its unique production process, the use of pure water from the nearby Josie’s Well, and its rich history. Having been crafting whisky for over 200 years, The Glenlivet is considered one of the most definitive Speyside single malts.

“Glen-lih-vit” is how to pronounce Glenlivet, with the emphasis on the second syllable.

The Glenlivet is a Speyside whisky, produced in the Speyside region of Scotland, and more specifically, in the Livet Valley near Ballindalloch.

The Glenlivet is made from malted barley which comes from Portgordon in Scotland, mineral water drawn from local springs, and yeast.

When translated from Gaelic, the Glenlivet means “The valley of the smooth flowing one” and is a reference to the Livet River which runs through the area of Speyside where The Glenlivet distillery is located.

As a single malt scotch whisky, our products are aged for a minimum of three years in oak casks. The type of cask and length of maturation varies by expression but includes American oak, European oak, ex-sherry, ex-bourbon, and ex-rum casks.

The Glenlivet was founded in 1824 by George Smith, becoming one of the first legal distilleries in Scotland, and the first in the parish of Glenlivet. Better known for its fruity, floral, and sweet characteristics, The Glenlivet is not considered a smoky whisky.

Typically, the Glenlivet is not a peaty whisky. It is generally light and smooth, with minimal peat influence.

The proof of The Glenlivet scotch varies depending on the specific expression, but it typically ranges from 80 to 120 proof (40-60% alcohol by volume).

If stored properly in a cool, dark place and with the bottle tightly sealed, The Glenlivet whisky can last indefinitely. Once opened, The Glenlivet is best enjoyed within six months. It can be drunk after this point and will not go bad, but you may experience subtle changes to the colour and flavour of the whisky due to oxidation.
